New dump truck carrier registrations jumped in May 2026, the month FMCSA moved to Motus. Part of the jump may be how the new system records them.

From May 2025 through April 2026, an average of 109 new dirt, rock and aggregate carriers were added each month. From May through September 2026 the average was 442. Texas went from 32 a month to 147.

Motus and the count

The jump starts the month FMCSA moved registration to Motus. We can't yet tell how much is new businesses and how much is how Motus records registrations, such as carriers re-registering or records being re-dated. A year of Motus data will tell more.

Either way, a new carrier has little or no inspection history, no safety rating, and often a first insurance policy, when cancellations are most common.

Next steps

Check a new hauler on HaulStanding before its first load, then watch it through its first policy term. A cancellation becomes an alert the day it appears.

How we counted. FMCSA public tables on data.transportation.gov, counted October 13, 2026. "Dump truck haulers" are active for-hire carriers that describe their cargo as dirt, rock, aggregate, asphalt, frac sand or dump work, or whose name says the work. FMCSA does not record truck body type. How we define the groups. Add date is when the USDOT number entered FMCSA's census. Carriers later inactivated still count in their month.

Public records as FMCSA publishes them, which can contain errors. Figures describe groups, not any one carrier. Not legal advice.
