The rule
Every carrier with a USDOT number must update its MCS-150 registration at least every 24 months, on a schedule set by the number, even if nothing changed. FMCSA can deactivate a number that isn't updated, but paused those deactivations in June 2026 amid problems after its move to Motus, and has not said when they resume. More on Motus.
The record
Of 85,299 active dirt, rock and aggregate haulers, 47,915 last filed more than two years before October 13, 2026. 19,559 report zero miles. In Texas it was 12,069 of 19,810.

Hiring haulers
On an old registration, the truck count, driver count, address, phone and miles can be years out of date, and the USDOT number can be deactivated once FMCSA resumes deactivations. An old date says nothing about how the hauler runs. Check a hauler on HaulStanding, which marks its MCS-150 Current or Overdue, and ask for the update before relying on the record.
How we counted. FMCSA public tables on data.transportation.gov, counted October 13, 2026. "Dump truck haulers" are active for-hire carriers that describe their cargo as dirt, rock, aggregate, asphalt, frac sand or dump work, or whose name says the work. FMCSA does not record truck body type. How we define the groups. Age runs from the census MCS-150 date to the count date; a carrier inside its filing window can show an old date for a few weeks. Dry bulk haulers: 41% older than two years.
Public records as FMCSA publishes them, which can contain errors. Figures describe groups, not any one carrier. Not legal advice.
